The label on a spare drive is more useful than a photograph of its connector. Record the manufacturer and full model number, then find the drive's specifications. An enclosure must support its interface and physical size, not merely resemble a case into which it might fit.
This distinction is especially important for M.2 drives. M.2 describes a form factor; products can use different interfaces. An enclosure intended for NVMe is not automatically suitable for an M.2 SATA drive. Some enclosures explicitly support both, but that capability should be stated. The supported module lengths and thickness constraints also need checking.
Build a compatibility record
Write down the drive interface, dimensions, capacity, and any unusual construction such as components on both sides. Compare each with the enclosure documentation. StarTech's dual-interface enclosure specifications, for example, list both supported protocols and module sizes rather than relying on the M.2 label alone.
For a larger SATA drive, verify whether the enclosure supports the relevant drive size and requires an external power supply. Include the power adapter in your space and travel plan. Never substitute a random barrel-plug adapter simply because the connector fits.
The enclosure's computer connection is another independent choice. Confirm that its cable and interface work with the host, and set performance expectations accordingly. A fast internal drive cannot exceed the limitations of the external connection. Read installation instructions for thermal pads or other supplied parts before assembly; an omitted pad or incorrectly fitted cover can undermine the intended design.
Preserve the contents first
If the drive already contains important data, plan how you will preserve it before modifying anything. A request to initialize or format the drive is a warning to stop and check compatibility and the existing file system. It is not a routine step to accept when you expect files to be present.
Follow the enclosure maker's installation procedure with all power disconnected. Handle the module by its edges and avoid forcing it into a connector. If it does not fit as illustrated, recheck the model and supported dimensions instead of trimming or bending parts.
After assembly, confirm recognition and copy a small noncritical test folder. Keep another copy of valuable data even if the enclosure works immediately. Reusing a drive can be useful, but a new case does not reset the drive's history or turn a single copy into a backup.
